Wonder what the legality of this is in the US, where I believe they have recently changed things so that's illegal to unlock your phone (see here.

I know. There is a "we the people" petition, which I believe has reached the number of signatures requiring a response form the White House. Not sure if there was a response, think there was. I also believe the president did speak to this issue within the last few weeks.
