Default recommend me a camera .

My 16yo daughter has decided to take a course in Art & Photography next year , but the only camera she has is mobile/ipod and am looking something to get her started. Want a decent compact digital for in and around £150 but have no current knowledge in the feild. She was looking at a Sony Cybershot W80b.

Any advice welcome

Not sure a compact camera will be suitable for this type of course, although without knowing about the course content it is difficult to be certain about that. Does the prospectus for the course confirm that a compact camera will be adequate?

Had this discussion with the wife , but she wants something simple to get her started with the intention of upgrading to a DSLR when needed. You know what women are like with changing their minds , and anything technical !

I work in the College and i seen the students borrowing DSLRs if they needed also.

It's just wasted money IMO

She will quickly out grow a compact. ESP whe she starts shooting in less well lit places etc.

Even if you buy her a cheap 1.8f 50mm and a cheap dslr. They still have auto modes etc

Oh i know all this , but its talking to the wall so far. I said if all she is doing is pointing and shooting she may aswell continue using the mobile , or even my crappy digital from years ago. I think she should wait till the course starts at least to see if she is out of her depth. Kids dont have a clue ! Im sure she thinks its just taking pics . . . .but im pretty sure there is more to it

If i know of a decent digital compact , i can tell the missus then stay out of it.
