Hotmail .....
.... since things have changed it's gone to ratsh1t in my opinion!
I have had an account with Hotmail since it started - now, I get constant messages saying it can't connect ... it's slow (even too slow for an old duffer like me!) ... it wants me to download Skype as my old faithful Messenger will cease soon.
Anyone else experiencing a terrible service now?

I thought it was only people without a real Email address and perverts who didn't want to get caught using their real Email address that used Hotmail.
Which one are you?

It's getting a bit damned complicated for me now ......
If I get a Tablet, which I've been thinking about, an Android OS one .... do I have to have a gmail account in that case, to use google apps?

Yes you need a gmail account setting up to use the Play store, but you don't need to use it, its only for registration. However it is better to use than hotmail. I use Gmail for friends and family, other important stuff. I use hotmail for use in filling in online forms when purchasing anything, junk contacts, etc. My Gmail remains free from online pests.

My Hotmail Account was set up as a junk e-mail over a decade ago .... but, after changing ISP Providers a few times, it has become my main account!
I suppose Gmail operates in the same way as Hotmail ... ie, not attached to an ISP Provider?

I have a hotmail account (since 97) but only access it from my iphone to auto sweep the inbox, which is always empty these days anyway. I own my own .com which is my surname, so no need to dick around with all these shonky mail providers who read your mail and sell the details for a few pence to anyone who is interested. Gives the kids pretty cool mail adresses too!

Now that Outlook has been forced on me and with the 'conversation' nonsense removed it is actually far better, if you ignore the shocking Win8 tie in.
Emptying deleted and junk folders is better and deleting an email that youre viewing send you back to your inbox, it doesn't open the next message, which is far better.
Remarks about perverts and children are puerile and show ignorance.

Gmail is my email provider of choice, business and personal. It's a shame Google are now charging for Google Apps for Business, I hope plenty of people took my advice and signed up whilst it was free. This does mean that I'm now looking at Microsoft for 'free' business email hosting, anyone using it? Thoughts?
