........then what the hell is a UP ?
Missus is looking at new mobiles and a few have the camera rated in "UP"s rather than "MP"s and i have no idea if a 1.2UP camera is any good !
Edit - its an UltraPixel , aperently (at least i can Google it now)

Its marketing garbage really...
It stands for ultrapixel - basically larger pixels, with the theory that each pixel will capture more light.
Really winds me up to hear folks who dont know any better claiming how good any camera is based solely on the number of megapixels it boasts. Its as though the lens, image processor and metering are all irrelevant!!

Reviews need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
It's essentially a 4mp sensor but with larger pixels, which translates to better low light performance, and better details, but at a cost of resolution.
Plus any issues are being ironed out with the new firmware.
Trouble was, htc handed out beta handsets hence why reviews are hit and miss.
It's a cracking phone, and my first htc as all previous phones were samsung.
I love it to bits.
I feel samsung missed the boat with the gs4.

No it's still a 4mp camera just the pixels on the sensor are larger, so will pick up more light.
Bit like comparing a compact to a dslr.
They can share the same mp, but the dslr would have a much larger sensor and lens
thus produce better results.
It's htc's attempt to get away from the megapixel myth.
Don't forget most phone pics are done in low light environments, this is where the htc shines.

More megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better pictures.
My old phone with it's 2MP camera, took better pictures that my current phone with a 5MP camera.

What htc did was make each pixel bigger than your average camera phone.
So it's still a 4mp camera but it's the same size as a 13mp sensor.
This means despite your pics being lower res, the larger pixels take in more light
meaning more detail and better low light performance.
Not sure I can dumb it down more than that.

I am pretty techy , i know what you are saying , i understand the relation of MPs/UPs etc . But you said that a 1.2 UP = 4MP , then you said its a 4MP with a sensor of a 13MP camera. You have to admit thats confusing (in the way that its hard to compare with anything , not that its hard to understand the principle)
I already read that link you posted after i started this thread (googled UltraPixel) but still dont reall understand TBH.
All i need to know is what it compares to , and as megapixel is the norm , thats all i can ask really

As for comparisons it's tricky results wise it bests all bar the nokia 808 pureview.
Just have a play with one, my galaxy nexus was a nightmare for snaps.
The htc is in another league. Other top end cameras come close, better in some but you'll always find that's in ideal situations or repeated shots were taken.
Htc provide the most consistent, using a fast shutter speed and ois.

Oh no it's up there with the best.
Certainly the best all rounder I've used.
And take any reviews with a pinch of salt, as most are biased anyway.
Just look on xda for example. Soon as it was released, plenty of new accounts signed on and did nothing but slate it.
Apparently samsung are well known for using shill accounts to discredit a competitor.
