Default Ipads, some confusion

I'm being very tempted tonight to press the order button on getting an Ipad but i'm slightly confused.

On the website it shows the Ipad 3 (with retina) and then the Ipad (with Retina). There is very little in difference price wise but whats the difference?

I was wanting to buy the 3rd version as it was a good price as compared to the 4th but they were all sold out. Apple is still making the 2nd version though which in theory would be the more sensible one to stop making?

I'm going to ask another pointless question as I'm really struggling to push the purchase the button but I have a niggle in the back of my mind.

Why pay 400 for an Ipad instead of a laptop?

things have moved on a lot in the last year, dont think the ipad is justified at 400, much better off (IMHO) getting the ipad2 for about 250 when on offer which is why they are still running them I think the ipad3 had a overheating fault, best thing about them is browsing web, ease of use and instant on. Although for me I can't stand browsing on ipads drives me crazy, not sure its been fixed on the new ones but if you have multiple tabs open (3 for example) and switch from one tab to another the entire page has to reload on each tab EVERY TIME!

Do not have this loading problem on my nexus but not sure if its device specific or software, if you do a lot of browsing i would double check in store first as it will drive you crazy

£400 is alot of money to me and I just don't want to buy something that wont suit me or I won't use due to limitations. I need some sort of portable device, I'm just not sure the Ipad would be better than a laptop now.

I do have an ipod but i hate itunes so never use it.
