PS3 won’t read discs any more
80gb Fat. Has had some serious usage so I cant complain (400+ hrs on BF3 in the past 18 months alone).
Was playing BF3 and starting making a strange sound. Game crashed but I couldn’t reset it from the console reset button so had to use the power button. One it came back XMB is fine but wont load BF3 or other games. Read online it might be blu-ray function only but tried a few DVD’s and no success their either.
Any quick fixes I can try other than fit a new drive or at the price of new consoles am I just better of biting the bullet and getting a new one?
Cheers

Will keep an eye out for a deal. Those new super slim versions only have 12gb storage. May just use it as an excuse to build a new gaming pc.

Says £39.99 on that site plus you have to ship it to them (and back I assume) and only a 6month warranty. New super slim 12gb SSD is £138 at Sains currently with a 3yr warranty.
Hmm will have to mull this one over. Wont be getting one from Santa this year as Santa has no job currently.

It is an easy job to do yourself.
You've got to weigh it up. If this is only the first issue you've had with the PS3, get a new one while you can still access all your data.
Because once you get the YLOD (yellow light of death), that should be due soon, you could lose all the data unless you fix that too (much harder job).

Yeah that is one thing that has stalled my purchase. The 12gb flash sounds good for load up speed etc but surely to god if you add an external HDD you should be able to choose where you install things i.e. most used game on the flash and other crap on the HDD. If you can fit an SSD as the external drive I maybe interested but from what I read so far I don’t think you can.

Alcazar,
I can't post links for some unknown reason, it never works
I searched you tube for "Xbox 360 unable to read disc"
Came back with a couple of videos,
One showed how to open the console and get to the laser head without damaging anything, cleaning of the head, and re building the console.
I did all this , but when re booted the console I had the same fault.
Then watched a second video that showed my problem, and the solution was to open the drawer using the eject button,
Then close the drawer by "slamming it by hand"
I was sceptical, but as I'd been arsing around to no avail all afternoon, that's exactly what I did.
Xbox now working fine!

We are talking about a 4 year old piece of equipment here. Spending 70 quid on it, to then have the other fault (YLOD) which could render it useless, is pointless.
Xbox is a different story. The Bluray lasers are a well know fault on the older PS3's. Once they die, they don't come back.

Fix the laser I have a launch ps3 that has had two laser replacements since new and never had YLOD yet. My PS3 has had a serious amount of use from day one and my resistance fall of man addiction. It also has a 300 gig hard drive they are just laptop drives and easy to find cheap on eBay

It's easy to swap a laser yourself, especially if you buy it already mounted to a deck, but not much more work if just the laser and you want to save more ££. My launch PS3 needed a new laser a few years ago, been fine since. Good idea to clean the inside of the console and apply new thermal paste to the chips while your there. Plenty of guides around.
Same with Xbox. Very easy and Xbox lasers are cheap. My friend gave me an old xbox that wouldn't read discs, I bought a new laser, but still haven't fitted it as I increased the power to the existing laser a little and it's fine for now, he was going to throw it in the bin.

Will have a look around on youtube as may as well try as its useless now as I only used it for gaming.
Is there an easy way to back up all gamesave / profile data rather than 1 by 1 to a usb stick? Seem to remember last time I tried some wouldnt copy over but others wouldnt.

Finally got around to ordering the new laser & deck which turned up today (£18 delivered). Wish me luck
Have watched a few “how to” vids on YouTube and whilst there seems a lot of screws & parts it looks fairly straightforward. Slow and methodical is the order of the day me thinks.
If it works or not will be going on ebay as a kit / spares. Back to PC gaming for me starting with Battlefield 4 at the end of the year.
