Errrr, I'm doing it now
I have a Terayon TeraJet 210 cable modem feeding via UTP to a network card on my firewall. The firewall has a second network card feeding the network hub which in turn feed the other computers
You can use a hardware router instead of my firewall setup which cost about £200 which will do the trick.
It def. can be done on NTL

What NTL mean is you cant run a LAN device like a hub or switch directly from the Cable Modem. You can as others have suggested go for several options to overcome this - the easiest/cheapest is to use one pc as a proxy/gateway/firewall with two ethernet cards - one to the cable modem and one to another PC or hub/switch depending on how many machines you wish to connect. Using a hub makes it easier for adding additional PC's in the future.
Main drawback is that the main PC needs to be on whenever u want connectivity to the internet which makes it a pain with my PC as it has a delta 5800rpm cpu fan which sounds like a chopper taking off. To overcome this some people fork out for a Cable/DSL router which links direct to the Cable Modem however this is a lot more expensive (around £100 min).
