VLC and handbrake would be worth a look.
How long an encode takes depends on how powerful your machine is and also what file format type you select. For example if you are to chosen we a resolution the decive does not render then it could explain why it looks crap

I have a 27" iMac (mid 2010) with base ram and it takes about 35 mins to rip a DVD to a 1.4 ish GB m4a file. This is using the high profile preset in handbrake.

Read this and see if it helps at all: http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopi...ight=handbrake

DVDFab demo on a separate partition, imaged before the install. Then whenever you need it (occasionally for me, hence not buying), reinstall the image and install the latest demo - good for 21 days.

Tried this, but it wants a payment. Is there a free version that's any good?

i use DVD decrypter to get the data off the disk and then AutoGK to convert it into a .avi file. It does take time but happy with the results.
