Cross platform, network issue help required
Just added a linux server/ media centre into my network
Jeez , ive never had so many issues...
All set up under a MShome workgroup
The setup is as below
Main PC (Earth) runs XP pro
Linux server (linux mint) has a storage drive (Core)
Laptop 1 (Moon) XP home
Laptop 2 (MoonII) Win 7 home (64bit)
Other DLNA items are on the system and currently access Earth to stream media
This is where the fun starts...
The linux server shows up on the system as Samba 3.6.2 Earth
I can log in from Moon and see and share files from Samba occasionally,, sometimes it wont show on the network.
If i log in on MoonII using admin, i can see and share files on Samba
However if i log in as a normal user on MoonII, i can see the folders, but
cant access them.
Any ideas how i can get normal sharing on all platforms

I assume on each machine you are authenticating using local credentials?
Try creating the same account account credentials on the linux box, it sounds as though your windows credentials are not known the the linux box.
Something else worth checking in local security policy on the windows box -
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Change this value to "Send LM & NTLM responses"
Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Change this value to "Disable Require 128-bit encryption"
I ditched all my windows boxes ages ago, but rebuilt a windows 7 machine a few weeks ago, had to go through these steps to enable it to see my NAS storage boxes.

Not sure. the win 7 has no passwords for the wifes acount, only the admin account (me ) requires a pwd.... likewise for the main pc (earth)
the other lappy xp has no passwords on either acc

(How, i'm seriously not up with linux)

Happy to try to help you out, if you have the time to spare, get a book on unix basics or read some tutorials, you will get quite frustrated with it if you don't. It is worth persevering with.
Create your user accounts - from a console session issue the following commands
sudo adduser mart360
you will be prompted for your root password. depending on your linux version you will be prompted to supply a password and some other details for the new account.
if this doesn't happen or if you need to change your password;
sudo passwd mart360
By the way linux is case sensitive.
I would make the local security policy change on all the windows boxes, I suspect the XP boxes will be done already.
