How to tell the format of an AVI file?

One of the lads here is just back from a diving holiday in Malta. They took some video footage of the dives and stored them in AVI format.
We can't get them too play on the NT4 workstations (Media PLayer complaining of the wrong decompressor), but XP is fine.
Is there anyway of telling which decompressor is needed or can you suggest another player to run on NT4?

They could possibly be DivX files. They usually have .avi extensions. Not sure if the DivX codec is installed in XP by default, but i know in Win2k and lower you have to install it seperately.

get an app like VirtuaDub as that will tell you what codec the avi was compressed with...

I've just downloaded 5.01 DivX , but it still doesn't recognise the format (tried the Divx Player as well as Media Player).
Also tried Virtual Dub, but again it doesn't recognise the format so won't even open it to check what format it's in
Any other ideas?

OK, we have some progress.
I opened the file in Media Player on XP. This lets me into the properties page and lists the Video codec as "AV Video Decoder".
After a quick search on Google, it looks like I might need DirectX 8 to view the video.
