DV capture software?
Right, I have several miniDV tapes that I've recorded on an old JVC camcorder. To be honest I hardly used the camcorder and it's now "old tech" so at some stage I'll get something better (probably just a phone ... ). The problem is, I'd like to extract the videos I have taken and put them onto my PC. This is essentially easy if you want low resolution captures, but I haven't found anything yet that will give me PAL resolution in an avi file.
To rephrase that, I haven't found anything "free" that will do that ..
Anyone got any suggestions?
As I said, the output should be avi and at PAL resolution (not 380odd by 270 odd). The input is via my ATI graphics card which gives me an S-Video input plus audio. Oh, and I'm on WinXP Pro. Windows Movie Maker captures in wmm format but not avi.
I've also been into a couple of photography shops, who do offer the service but have no clue as to what form the output is. For example, at the first one the chap who actually did the 'miniDV to DVD' was there. He doesn't use a PC and had a blank look when I asked about file formats and just went on about how much video footage he could get on each DVD ....
Tips? Suggestions? I can't see why there shouldn't be any free apps. for this out there as it's not that difficult.
Cheers.

edit: i think that link is for upgrade only, you need original software that came with the card i think, yep "Requires original installation CD for Radeon® 9000/9200/9500/9600/9700/9800 series graphics adapters or MMC 8.1 installation CD to validate DVD decoder update."

Right. Now I'm over the cold and can actually sit down for 5 minutes .... don't have Firewire on the PC (well, I have, but got no cables and it's never been connected since I built it in about 2004 ... ) and I don't have the original CD. Which is strange as I never throw stuff like that away ...
Bleddy good advice that! It works a treat. Just needed some time figuring out what all the menu items meant but once I'd figured out what I needed from the package it works great! Ta for that.
