Anyone on NTL ( dialup ) with XP ?

Friend is using XP pro over dialup to connect to ntlworld. Has worked perfectly for weeks , suddenly started throwing "Error 50 - Handle not supported" this monday
Modem is installed and dialling up fine , have checked all the numbers / dns settings / protocol stuff ... all looks bog standard and fine. Have deleted DUN connection and re-added . Have installed new XP specific modem drivers.
Still the same problem.
Ntl's 'help'line (£1 per minute) refused to even talk to her once they found out she was using xp pro ... apparently they will support xp , but not pro version :rolleyes ..
Anyone using this combination ? She is losing the plot at the moment..
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Well I keep telling her to ditch her isp and get a proper one.
I have convinced them to get broadband as they are moving soon....
