Default iTunes and folder organising

Ok.... so have decided to take a punt and let iTunes organise my folders

Currently have them in the following format:

Album Artist - Album Name

They have all been tagged properly but I wanted to know if iTunes uses the Album Artist or the track artist to organise my music?

As I have a lot of compilations I would prefer it to be :

Album Artist > Album Name

Otherwise it could get really messy!!

Finally - If I deselect 'copy media to folder' but tick 'keep media folder organised' will it 'replan' my current structure into the itunes way or leave it alone?

Please - no "itunes is ****" comments

iTunes will create a Compilations folder for your 'Compilations'

Mine are Artist > Album.

I think but can't be sure that if you only select keep media folder organised it will only organise new tracks added.

Cheers Jack - I don't want to manually go thru itunes and select files and do the whole 'part of compilation' thing so I am guessing if I set the album Artist as 'various artists' then it'll automatically use that in combination with Album name and classify it as a compilation?

I've never told iTunes what's a compilation and what's not, it just 'knows'

It also has a habit of storing non compilation albums in the compilation folder, any reason for this ? or just one of those things.

Cheers Jack

So it's Compilations > Album > All Tracks?

Or

Compilations > Artist > All Tracks by that artist?

Just importing my music into iTunes now and the vast majority of my albums (which by rites are compilations) are going in their own folders (ie. outside of the 'compilations' folder).

Those that have made it into compilations have no tag difference from those outside!

Think I've worked it out - all seems ok so far (fingers crossed)

Even subscribed to iTunes Match - let's hope it all works out and doesn't end in disaster!!

Thanks to those that helped
