Question Broadband providers...... might have to change....

OK, been with Vodafone at Home since they started it up (took a bit of a punt, that imho, paid off).
Been on a solid reliable 6.8Meg with free phonecalls package for £25 per month (inc line rental).

Not the cheapest, but it has been VERY reliable, and when my old router died, they sent me a new upgraded one (with wifi).

Voda have sent me a letter this morning stating that they've basically sold this aspect on.

To Plusnet.

Everything will be the same except that my BB speed could go up to 20 Meg.

I hear mixed reviews about PLusnet...

Any thoughts?* Are they any good?** Should I be looking elsewhere?

*Don't need to know about Nildram, Zen etc, as I live in the middle of nowhere, so cant get it - I've tried.
** I know the Interweb is full of reviews etc, but most I fear, are written by the companies themselves - hence asking one of THE most IT-savvy forums on the planet.

I'm on fibre to cabinet (FTTC) with Plusnet. Been pretty good so far. 20Mbps and stable.

Was on Plusnet in my Manchester office for a while. Woeful speeds in the late afternoons/evenings and a support desk that may as well be unmanned! Still that was 2 years ago so maybe things have changed.

Read this reply qucik before Ali the Genius removes it for trolling!

I've been with PlusNet for a few years now and currently have their FTTC service. Had problems with when I was on the old ADSL2 and PN did what they could, it was an intermittent fault and in the end PN told BT to swap my pair between the house and the cab. Maybe took longer than I'd hoped but it was never a permanent fault so when BT visited everything seemed ok. The BT engineers told me the pair would not have been swapped under normal circumstances unless they could find a fault.

Since the FTTC was connected a year ago I've been chuffed to bits. I like the way PN make it clear how they throttle stuff and not being a torrent user I don't really suffer.

Well, I think I'll confirm that I'm not signing up to a contract, and give em a go. If I don't like the service, I can always walk then!

Regarding this FTTC, I don't think I'll be able to get it, as my house is connected to the cab by a polystyrene cup and string (we're in the Countryside!! )

If you like to download a decent amount of media when YOU want to, forget it with Plusnet. They also throttle connections and block certain *cough protocols.

Must be the Yorkshire thing, tight as a duck's ***.

Scoobydoo555 did you move and if so how did you find them? I have no interest in Torrent but do quite a lot of gaming (BF3 on PS3). I’m with Talktalk after they took over Pipex and speeds are woeful in the evening. I like the no contract idea. They offer a free router for 12mth sign up but as I have one already that’s no great loss. £50 cashback as well at the moment.

Have a look at BE, they do some cracking deals on bundles, may not be the cheapest, but no throttling, no limits, caps whatsoever

I would second BE* although they are having some speed issues (such as the exchange I'm on). Have a look and then a wander through their forums and see if you are on one of those exchanges.

Gone with Sky - got SO sick & tired of 0.5meg speeds from Plusnet (and throttling!).

Hope Sky aren't any worse (been told I'll be getting around 18meg until they upgrade the exchange in July)

We'll see.

Got it free for 6 months anyway.

Having a look at BE currently. Looking at £31pm for Value Broadband and Anytime Calls. Which is not a major amount more than I pay Talk Talk and thats for Eve & W/end Calls only.

So even though O2 own BE they are seperate entities? I see a lot of bad reviews for 02 which is a shame as my wife works for them and gets a discount.

I tried accessing their forums but looks like you can't unless your a member already unless I miss something??

Cheers

I've been with PlusNet for years.... if they were crap I would have moved by now.

Their services are very good imo and their support is great. They have very active community forums where support staff regulary visit and answer support issues. Their support ticket service works well and response times are OK.

All in all great value service imo.

I've just realised that Sky are now offering LLU services to our exchange so up to 20mb and currently doing a 6 months free offer so am pretty tempted to give them a go.

What speed did you get in the end? They told me 7-14mb estimated and started me at 4mb (was actually 3.5) and has gradually increased up to 12.3mb down and 0.94mb up which its sat at for the last 3 days so I assume that’s my limit. But that is double (download and upload) what I was getting with Talk Talk at the best of times. However during peak hours my TT connection crawled at a lowly 1.5mb. Speedtest comparisons taken at exactly the same time of day:

My router says connected speed is over 14mb so I hope they squeeze a little more out.

I read on their forums you can request a gamer profile for reduced ping times but you then get a reduced download rate also. Will see how mine goes over the next couple of months. It is a massive step up from what I was getting with Talk Talk.
