I was considering a laptop or a tablet for a while now, so bought a Motorola xoom last night after reading alot of reviews, plus points for the xoom are it has a duel core processor, it has expandable memory (micro SD) also has a USB socket and has a HDMI socket

IMHO - (having both devices), you can't compare the two.
The iPAD is a nice mobile-esque device but is not designed for those that ultimately want to have greater connectivity in terms of camera's, memory cards etc and if you're like me and a bit of a geek then you'll need every conceivable type of port anyway - something the iPAD severely lacks.
Yes the iPAD has it's advantages but the laptop will always have it's own place. Put simply - a laptop(especially a Mac with launchpad etc now) can do everything an iPAD can yet it doesn't work in the opposite way!

I'm not sure I could choose between one or the other. The iPad gets more general use than the MacBook as there's nothing it can't do. But sometimes the MacBook does it better. .

It's not a question of one versus the other - you probably could use both.
Laptop is useful for all of those bits of specific PC software (Office, Photoshop, etc.) and the variety of ports / connectivity that most gadgets demand these days.
iPad is great for the apps and for general surfing / email whilst lounging around.
I'd say that ideally you need a high power desktop, and a media centre as well, but understand if everyone doesn't want a house full of Intel processors...

As above, it depends what you want to do.
The iPad is great for consuming information, whether that be movies, spreadsheets, email and the internet. It is terrible for creating it. Creating a spreadsheet or even a word processing document on the iPad is very painful. Possible, but painful. The on-screen keyboard isn't as bad as some people say and I can touch-type on it. If you create things, you will have to use dropbox or iCloud to store it.
The laptop is of course capable of both consuming and creating things. If you can afford it, the MacBook Air is very good and truly portable. Just while I am on a negative post: The MacBook air is a pain if you want to use it at work though: No ethernet (that'll be a plug in) or Monitor Out (that'll be another plug-in). So you walk around with this awesomely sleak piece of technology and have to carry two white dongles with you ....
