Question External Drive Suggestions

I need to get a basic external drive. Just USB 2.0 plug in, about 500gb. Not fussed about being super fast but I do need it to be fairly robust as I have now had 2 drives which have failed.

There seem to be a variety between £40 - £65 but they all seem to do the same job so which one do I select? Do I just assume the more expensive the better?

Cheers, David

I tend to stick to WD these days. It's more about personal preference really.

The more expensive ones generally come with more software which I don't like using. So just be wary of the extra features they try to charge you for that you won't end up taking full advantage of.

I agree with CrewJ. I've got 5 WD ones, all of different sizes and they've worked flawlessly for several years now on several different devices. Before the HDD increase, they were about £45 for 1TB, £55 1.5TB and £65 2TB. (WD Elements)

Oh yeah that's a good point.

Hold off from buying any hard drives for now!

There was some sort of flood (I lack the details) in Korea (May be wrong on location) where they manufacture them and there is now a massive shortage on all hard drives worldwide. Some prices have gone up 300% so I thought I should warn you.

I have a freecom tough drive (baby blue rubber cover), this has survived a couple of drops and a lot of transportation in my laptop bag through airports etc.
