Iphone 3GS, any way to create your own text tones ?
Ive tried looking high and low and i can't see or find any option to add your own test tones, is their anyway to do this without jailbreaking ?
I don't understand why apple make some things so difficult and so awkward, its not like someone is going to suddenly gain enough power to take over the world by adding a simple text tone.

While I see what you're saying, I'm personally glad message tones are limited, I remember when tones were a fad and offices sounded like arcades, it was terrible.
Jailbreak only for now.

It would appear that iringer changes text alerts as well. TEXT alerts are set (choice of 10 IIRC)
Jailbreak is the only way. Get access to the folder, and you have to rename your pre-prepared file to one of the EXISTING names....
I've done it. The existing tones are IMHO awful, and due to the popularity of the of iphone, common. Funny to watch though - when 10 or so people's phones get text messages

Nah.......... I have an iPhone... Poop Poop Poop.....
Out of the box, you can`t use MP3`s as ringtones or as txts tones.... You only get to use the boggy standard type alerts...
No Bluetooth either... Was really disappointed in it when I got mine. Only saving grace was it`s Apps and games....
I`ll not be getting an iPhone again when my contract renews.. No way

It also has Bluetooth but it does not support file transfer. It is there specifically for Bluetooth headsets.

Bluetooth file transfer is another one I don't miss at all. Being in a pub getting sent all kinds of rubbish from strangers and advertising companies is what I remember. I'll stick with sending my files the same way as I do from my Desktop just mobile.

yes, you can use it handsfree (and it works very well - got it set up in the car), but file transfer is a PITA.
Won't even work with a Mac.
And despite there being people who don't use file transfer, a great many DO. eg, a lot of my students have iphones and as part of project work, can't bluetooth photos or files between their device and the Macs.
Yes, they can use their data cables...... but that's IF they remember them
It is a pain to receive junk sh1te from nobodies in pubs etc, but as a code of practice, I NEVER keep my BT roaming/ID discoverable. That's just stupid.
It's a common known issue that BT isn't exactly a secure connection
But that doesn't mean that iphone users shouldn't be able to use it.
Anyway, this is classed as "digression", so apologies for the thread hijack!

Can someone confirm 100% one way or the other that you either can or can't create your own text alert tones ? Its just the factory ones from apple are so bland its untrue.
I'm trying to get Max's car alarm (phoenix nights) as my text alert tone "Get back you b'stard or i'll break your legs beeeeep"

If students want to transfer files, why not use something like drop box. It's free, easy, quick and they can make certain files public so you can share files between multiple users simply.
People get hung up on what certain devices don't do, but almost always there is another solution and sometimes that solution is better.

My original answer still stands, no you can't unless you Jailbreak and that's a hobby for pimply teenagers.

I had a great big diatribe written to retort to this, but it's not worth it. (not you Ant)
Simply put, "never argue with an idiotic point of view. You'll be dragged down to their level and then beaten with vast idiotic experience".

You can use MP3's as ringtones, just not for text notification. You can use any 30 second MP3 track as a ringtone, you can even create your own quite easily iTunes or many other third party programs and sync them from iTunes to your phone.

I have iphone 3GS... Someone has told me that it has bluetooth capability, just no software added by apple to run it....
Unless I`m missing something, I`m just not able to connect any bluetooth device to my iPhone........ .... Mind you, I`ve hit 40 now... So, that maybe a factor... LoL

But my contract is renewed soon, don`t think I`ll be getting next gen iPhone...

It might be worth doing a restore, mine picks up all sorts of available connections and so should yours. Might be worth taking it to a store as it sound like a swap candidate to me.
