Default Wireless coverage ?

My inlaws live in a long, thin house and its old with very thick walls, they have Orange internet with some shonky old router, the coverage is pathetic as it comes in at one end and reaches about 10 feet before you cant get a signal, they have asked me to see what I can do so after suggestions for a setup that will help in this situation, am thinking range extenders but have no experience of them, any suggestions ?

A new router, non shonky. I'd buy an airport express, if it's not enough you can use it as an extender.

Cheers Jack, will give them a look, MIL is after an IPAD so an Apple router may make sense.

cheap fix = cover a u shaped bit of cardboard in tin foil and place it round the wireless router. This will increase the distance in the signal. I have tried this and it works. I was getting no signal in loft after the diy fix i had no problem. This was even tested on the gadget show. Cheap fix until you decide on right router.
