Do free programs ever have spyware built in?

Default Do free programs ever have spyware built in?

The reason i ask is, i have just downloaded E-Z contact book, a little free program to store all my contacts, names, phone numbers.

Is there ever a chance it could contain spyware, and what could i do about it?

Most probably, run malwarebytes it's free
