Default PS3 Yellow lLight of Death (YLOD)

I managed to revive my PS3 from the YLOD today.

After 3 years of problem free gaming it switched itself off with the dreaded 3 beeps and the yellow flashing light.

Thank God for Youtube, you can find anything on there. Attached is a step by step guide in 3 parts including re-assembly. All it cost me was a tenner for the heatsink compound (I used aksaka 455 as it came well recommened for PS3s).

If your PS3 has been aflicted with the YLOD then I'd stongly recommend you take a look; however, if it's still under warranty get Sony to fix it.

Sony are charging £128 to fix units out of warranty and there are other companies charging from £59.99 upwards.

I've fixed loads of these, using a heat gun, removing cleaning old thermal compound and re apply with new.

Longest one lasted was 3 weeks.

Another went on me, I couldn't be bothered so sent it off to console doctor in Newcastle

That was back with them every week for 6 weeks until I gave up.

It wont last unless it's done on a microscopic machine. These things cost £3,000.

Keep it well ventilated and Hoover the dust from the vents.

Fingers crossed it may last a month or two

Well... that p!ssed on my bonfire

Lets see how long it lasts... I have moved it into a well vebtilated spot.

Before it died, the fan used to cut in about 3 minutes after switching it on, and stayed on the whole time it was in use.

So far the fan has only cut in once temporarily, and that was before I moved it. I moved it and the fan cut out after 10 minutes and didn't come back on for the remaining hour of use.

Fingers crossed eh...

quick question then, if it is out of warranty & no issues - is it worth getting a better cooling fan(s) for the machine to keep temps down?

I've been considering that too... mine has definately been running a lot cooler since I moved it.

I've found this on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-PlayS...item4cf88233d1

Not sure if it's any good or not?

Yes there is a cheap cooling fan that connects to the ps3 through USB.

You can get them for a few quid off eBay

I've fixed 2 YLOD's. First one is still going as far as I know, so over 6 months. The second lasted about a day. I used the method, the same compound.
I just don't think its worth saving the "phat" PS3'a. Get a slim, much quieter.

Touch wood I think I've got away with it... I'm no expert but I think the heat sink compound used by Sony was shyte. When that breaks down the heat generated by the CPU and GPU has nowhere to go and therefore melts to solder as it's no longer being absorbed properly by the heat sinks.

The new compound that I used is good for over 100 degrees, I used it for 2 hours tonight and it isn't wasn't getting hot at all and the fan was not kicking in; the fan used to be on constantly before the YLOD took hold.

My personal prognosis is that it's down to the compound.

I'd recommend changing the thermal compound before you get a failure, if you start to hear the fans running at full speed after short periods of time. Did a friends recently as his fan was on a lot. There was a very small amount of thermal paste on the GPU and CPU from the factory and the coverage was very poor, I would say less then half the chips had any on. Also gave it a good vacuum inside as it was very dusty. The only proper way to cure a failure caused by a dry joint is a reball. You could try a reflow on the motherboard with a heatgun. It might fix it, but it might not work at all, or only last a few more weeks.
