Default Internal HDD upgrade question

I'm fed up with moving stuff around on the internal 350GB HDD, so it's time to upgrade. Problem is i don't know which one will work with my dated PC, all this SATA3, 2 blah blah.

It's for a Dell Dimension 5150 (don't laugh )

Didn't want to spend more than £50 and it seems there's some 2TB and a lot of 1TB for that price. (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/254429)

SATA version won't matter, they are all backwardly compatible.

HTH

P.S. Assuming you have SATA that is

Crikey that's a old one iirc they are sata so any should fit, you should have a spare bay and slot for the HDD so just add That and leave the existing one in

Wow, that's freaky!

I bought a 5150 ages ago, and also a pair of Hitch Deathstar 1TB drives (one for backup) to act as my central "filestore" (but i still need to get around to building it properly).

Duzzn't help you, but a weird coincidence

p.s.
I bought my drives from eBuyer n'all
p.p.s.
Maybe time to buy a lottery ticket - is the Euro one still rolling over?

Common problem now,

I have 2 pc's that are semi dead due to hard drive failures....

Large IDE drives are now becoming thin on the ground...

Its all SATA, which the mobo's in these machines don't

It doesn't look like i've got a spare bay. And with it being so old, it could well be IDE, that rings a bell. So what exactly do i need to upgrade?

Your Dell support SATA,if you don't have bay for HDD,you can have look for Hot Plug/Hot Swap bay, which you can add there where you have free port for DVD/CD

Hot Plug/Hot Swap cost around £11-£25 and more...

That's great! Thanks guys.

So i'll just buy a SATA drive and stick it in there somewhere. Excellent, i've like 25MB left and moved and archived off everything i can.

OK, so the drive arrived today. Is it just a case of copying the whole of C:\ onto it and it will boot up from the new drive i'll be able to remove c: ??

no,

You'll need to run a disk cloning program like Norton Ghost or similar.

Reading it's good to run CCleaner first.

Some cloners i've come across: ImageIT, HDClone 4.

Ah man! This is proving to be a royal PITA. I've cloned it about 3 times now, everytime it partitions the new HDD to match the original. I don't want that. I just want all the data from C: (150gb), onto D: (2TB) so i can remove C:

Gave up on HDClone. I'm now trying EaseUS Todo Backup. At least the GUI was a little more informative about partitions etc. I'm running a partition clone, rather than disc clone, so let's see....

Keep C, install the 2tb as a slave drive and use that as storage.

That way when Windows goes **** up you still have all your data and can simply reinstall Windows without a worry.

I've removed C: and left it as an off-site backup. I replaced C: as i liked to have all the pictures under My Pictures and Documents etc under the Start Button, which would easily fill the old drive.

EaseUS Backup got the job done.

The only problem is now, the machine is running like a dog! Really slow. Any reason why that should be?

Also, when i'm a bit more flush. I'll then replace D: with another 2tb and be able to backup C: internally.
