Time to resurrect the thread as Skyrim is out next week.
I've pre-ordered mine through Amazon (may well be the first game I've pre-ordered) and I got an email from them this morning:
Always nice to get an extra for nowt.
and it seems the graphics aren't a killer like they used to be so I won't need to SLI my GTX 570. (which is good as I bought the wrong bloody mobo at the time)

As you've pre-ordered The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, we wanted to let you know that Bethesda, the game's manufacturer, have been in touch with us.
They've confirmed that all customers who pre-order The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Amazon.co.uk will receive a 'Premium Quality World Map' included in the game box.
For more information, visit: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.h...cId=1000592243

PC version is a little fraught.
Turns out you have to set your sound playback to 44KHz just to get the damn thing to start....
Yeesh.
Aaaanyway - my summary: So far, so Oblivion. Which is not a bad thing.
I like the smelting / smithing / tanning etc - you get to make and improve your own weapons. Plus you have dismantle stuff to know what it does.
Same goes for Alchemy: you want to know what an ingredient does? Eat it. Poisoned? Whoops.
Want to enchant something, you need to breakdown a magical item to learn the enchantment - all good stuff and adds layers to the game
I did still have something of a brown pant moment the 1st time I fought a giant - the ground actually shakes when he's running after you. Yes, after you. You think I'm gonna stand toe to toe (or face to kneecap!) with a guy that kills you with one blow?
Oh, and don't talk to me about Dragons.....

Magic works really well against the Dragons. Wait for them to land and burn the buggers.
I've found couple of firebows (one Imperial, one Orcish) and these burn for Fire Damage as well, they really help!
(apparently after lvl 10 they get harder and after lvl 15 come in pairs!)

I looked at this on Amazon last night £22.99 wondering if to get it.Looked again this morning, its now £27.00 still not sure after looking on you tube, graphics don't look that good and most gameplay seemed to be gamers just wondering around the map with no real objective. On the other hand though RAGE has been reduced to £11.99...

There are LOADS of sub-quests available within the game, just flipping loads. My quest screen was chocka with the damn things and I stopped talking to people just to give me chance to catch up on them all.
There are layers and layers in this game - you can just go gung ho and be a tank character, but even then you can build up better armour and enchantments yourself, to improve things even further.
I've maxed out my smithing skills so I can make the best armour in the game and am enchanting like mad to max THAT out, to get the best buffs added to the armour.
Basically you can play the game to whatever style you like. It fits around it.
I'm playing a sneaky, magic wielding archer and can kill loads of things without them even finding me - or running over the traps (that I don't set off) and listening to the bad guys dying behind me, 'cos they just set them all off
