New Mobo
Hi all
Can anyone recommend a good mobo for overclocking based on the following spec:
Q6600 G0
5850 Powercolor PCS+
8 GB (4 x 2GB) Corsair XMS2
OCZ Vindicator Heatsink
Also needs 5 or 6 SATA connections
Mid Tower PC size case (Thermaltake Soprano VB1000BWS)
Asus Xonar D1
Its currently on an MSI 975x (MS-7246) which is utter poo for O/C and I can't even get the proc to run at 3.0Ghz stable which it should do all day long. After something not too pricey if poss. I get mind boggled with all the different mobos!
I suppose its probably worth SSD-ing the OS drive at the same time?
Glad of any assistance

I use an Asus P5K-E and had mine at 3.4 GHz using a Corsair H70 cooler... and a large fan blowing down onto the voltage regulators... after a couple of years something died and it now runs at 3 GHz but only two of the memory slots still work.
Also a > 60 Gb SSD will get your PC started much quicker, and prices are heading towards reasonable these days.

As above Asus Mobo will do job with good cooler,i've run few months on air i7-920 4.4ghz without problem with Arctic Cooling Freezer(good as are Coolermaster V8) or you can switch to water as is Corsair H-50/H-70 and if you want top, have look for Koolance,or if you want break some records you can have look for LN2 Cooler

Thanks guys, I've been having a sniff around and its proving difficult to find socket 775 mobo's anymore, let alone ones with enough connections and ram banks!

Don't be afraid of ebay...
I have a pair of Asus P6T6 WS X58 MoBo's running BOINC searching for pulsars 24/7. All in I got two top spec six core PC's with triple SLI graphics for the price of one.

P.S. The graphics cards do the complex maths, not for playing games...

Trouble is that first one is DDR3 and I've got 8GB DDR2, and both don't have enough RAM slots, need 4
Keeping an eye on ebay - few on there, trying to minimise mobo spend so I can get an SSD, hence why I need to try and utilise my existing kit.
Should have done it a year ago when there were loads about!

Yes that would fit your requirements, not a bad board tbh and has all the bits on you need
If your running win7 then you can make use of the extra 2 slots for memory, though you may be better going for a ddr 3 memory board, you can pick up 8gb of GOOD ddr3 for 70ish quid now

I've been looking for the P5QL PRO too - its mainly a case now of which I can get my grubby hands on first!!
As for DDR3 from reading around it doesn't really offer much over DDR2 and buying that would mean no SSD for the OS, and I'd rather get an SSD than replace perfectly good memory!!

DDR2 will be slower than DDR3, if you run 800mhz ddr 2 then put 1600mhz ddr3 in, thats 50% quicker access, so yes, it does offer benefits
Interesting info for you
Tony
Interesting info for you
DDR3 uses significantly less power, and can run much faster. It uses 1.5V per chip, which is 0.3V less than DDR2. Additionally, when it comes to its Data rate, DDR2 (depending on its chip) can run at 400-1066 MT/s (megatransfer per second). In regards to its peak transfer rate, it can transfer from 3200-8533 MB/s. DDR3, on the other hand, can run from 800-2133 MT/s and 6400-17066 MB/s. In regards to the I/O bus clock, DDR2 is only available between 200-800 MHz, whereas DDR3 supports from 400-1600 MHz. Essentially, DDR3, when there are improvements from DDR2, can double in processing power. The fact that DDR3 consumes less power in outperforming DDR2 is impressive.

Thanks for the info Tony, is interesting! Think I'd still rather have the ssd then do a ram, mobo, CPU upgrade when the 6600 is running out of puff

My DDR2 is 1066 rated and actually running at 1200...
Q6600 is a quality piece of kit, I had to pay £200 to get some measurable increase in performance.
dunx
P.S. Mine is going to a game paying pal for a "pocket money" price...
