Nope, But just (literally 5 minutes ago ... spooky ... ) ordered my line! Next Friday morning for installation. Cabinet is 400 yds from my house. A couple of miles from the exchange but I get 8Mbs ADSL at present so looking at about a gazillion Mbs with FTTC ...

How I would love 1.5mb, currently getting 425 kbps (the official line is because we are 3 miles from the exchange ) not even You Tube streams, hit the pause button and walk away for 10 minutes, an absolute disgrace considering I live on the out skirts of a town with a population of 155000. I have gone backwards in terms of technology with my last 2 moves....

Could it be Sky ?, subscribed to the entire package when we moved home and they even installed a new phone line, even the BT engineer who installed the line warned it would be slow because we are so far from the exchange.
Having read up it is a real issue in our area with the local council even starting a campaign along with the local rags. I think Patience is the key word here, but it is like travelling back in time to 1998 with these speeds

That speed was taken by one of the on line line speed testers at E-Hampshire (local council website) they were running one of the campaigns for improved Broadband in our town, pc is wired into the router which is plugged into main socket 5 inches away ! BT decided to place the new phone line in the spare bedroom

3 miles you should get a hell of a lot more than that. I'm 3 miles from the exchange and on LLU I get 6mb. Someones pulling your chain telling you that is normal. You could be on a damaged copper pair from the exchange, the very minimum a call should be logged by your isp to BT to come out and check it. Take the line stats from the master socket try a new copper pair between the exchange and the green box your house phone connects to and then check the line stats again.
Can you post up your line stats that can be found on your router. You are looking for SNR and attenution figures etc.

Does your router not give you a page that lists 'down speed' and 'up speed'? Mine gives a nice round figure of '8128000' (or 8Mbs ... ).
Edit: doh .... didn't read B2Z's comments along the same lines ....

I'll have a look tonight chaps
Either way it is 90's style slow, I mean who has to wait for a You Tube clip to load and watch it pause time and again whilst it d/l's at the slow speeds

I forgot there are 2 products Sadly I think BT have said that where they have deployed FTTC they will be last on the list for FTTP, shame but then I'm not unhappy with the speeds I get now.

Just been having a chat with a BT Openreach engineer outside in the rain, poor chap
So the fibre is from the enabled exchange to the cabinet (green box) and then they call the link to your house the 'copper mile'
So it will have a small drop as it travels the distance.
The trick then is finding your nearest cabinet, the closest you are the better

You need to quote the speed you get from your house to the exchange. The speed testers measure the speed you get from the speed testing site to your house. Use a different web site and you get a different result. To be fair to your ISP the only rate they can (more or less!!) guarantee is that to your house from the exchange. After the exchange the wonders of the interweb come into play and you get caught up in a million different issues like congested routes, farmer Giles putting his excavator through a main line, slow servers 'cos the sys admin hasn't rebooted 'cos he's down the pub, etc etc.
