Default Setting up a band website..... couple of queries...

A brain-pick really.

Looking at setting up a new band website.

I want to have a band log-in area so that we can update a gig calendar that will be shown on the site.

Are there any "drag/drop" options for this type of thing, or will I have to code it all?

CMS system could be used for this. Have a look at Joomla. If you have a hosting package which includes cPanel, have a look around as they usually have a section where you can install software, and Joomla is typically one of the options.

If you don't have a hosting package that has it, it's pretty simple to setup, requires, PHP, SQL, and probably perl too. You could set it up on a Mac running 10.4 - 10.6 if you wanted - I've manage a site that uses Joomla and have a local version running on my machine so I can fiddle with things without breaking the live site.

You're a band and you want visitors, tell them you're on Facebook and they'll visit and click 'like', it has an events calendar that will let them know when your next gig is, no need for them to return.

You're a band and you want visitors, tell them your website is www.blablabla.co.uk 99% of them won't visit, none will return.

Setting up a Facebook page with relevant url www.facebook.com/yourbandname will cost you nothing and take ten minutes. Set up a web page and it will cost you more than you think and take more time than you can imagine.

Most Bands seem to use MySpace for this also. Would definitely use that and Facebook.

For example, my mates band:

http://www.myspace.com/baddies
http://www.facebook.com/pages/BADDIES/17843330789
http://twitter.com/listentobaddies
http://www.listentobaddies.co.uk/

etc.

yeh, thanks for the thoughts.

I've already setup Facebook (band), Myspace, Twitter & Reverbnation.
was moreso looking at an idiot/drummer-proof calendar setup for the gigs etc.
Maybe even incorporating Google Calendar into it.....

(as the band & bandname already have the gmail accounts set up)

Perhaps I'm re-inventing the wheel......
However, some band-members are leaning towards a specific website rather than a sync'ing combo of sites.....

The website of the band linked by CD is very good. Give http://www.northernsoulstudios.com/ a call and get ready for a shock.
