Probably. The Genius in the Store today said that all complaints regarding the 3GS were fixed with a reset. The 3G is slow in some areas, but certainly not unusable after a reset.
Everyone should have the same hardware and software and any applications have been authorised so any issues should be easy to fix.

Wicked! I can do the death grip on my 3GS now. Awesome work Apple, show there's no problem with the iPhone 4 by demonstrating that all phones do that. That's going to be the theme of the Press Conference.

Okay so the update was applied last night.
Result ?
Taller bars
Better signal strength : NO
Fixes the drop out of bars when held : NO
No surprise really but then I dont care as the case is always on
Interesting article suggesting that a software fix MAY help instead of a recall

antennas are dipoles and they have to be a measured fractional length of the signal wavelength. by touching the 2 pieces of the outer case band, you change that length and it's no longer an exact fractional length and hence you lose signal.
i hope it's not a hardware problem, but occam's razor 'n all that

Just noticed I lost Game Centre in the update, didn't even realise it was a dev only app. Thought everyone had it, no wonder no one accepted my requests.

Ok, this is interesting.
Got home last night and as Mrs DD was getting my 3G, I backed it up, then cleared all data from the settings menu. Upgraded it to ios4.0.1 (all quite painlessly I have to say) to give her, effectively, a clean "new" phone so she didn't feel too bad about me getting the 4.
I've already posted on here that my 3G was much improved by a full restore speed wise, but what I'm happy to report is that after a full data erase, upgrade from ios 4 to 4.0.1 and restore (just for the hell of it) it is now operating at pretty much the same speed it was before the upgrade to ios4.
In other words, its absolutely fine running 4.0.1. its not clunky or slow.
She's got her contract sorted and is now on a great tariff for £25 a month (900 mins, free texts, unlimited (yes, unlimited) data and is a happy bunny with a fast as it was new 3G.
Maybe 4.0.1 has sorted the speed issues. Maybe clearing all the data and starting from scratch made the difference.
I woke up to find an active microsim in my 4 (having followed the o2 website steps last night) and its working great.
btw - deleted, restored and updated 2 phones last night all within an hour.

The reason for the large size is because it's the full iOS and not just the 4.0 to 4.0.1 update. This is done so that if you're on 3.x then you can jump straight to 4.0.1 rather than having to go to 4.0 and then 4.0.1. Same deal as with the Mac OS X combo updates, which are usually huge.

Woot, Woot! iOS4.1 included better bluetooth support, you can now skip forward and back and adjust the volume. Brilliant news as my Alpine iPod only stereo still doesn't work very well.

Mart, please don't make me go through a list of features that excludes you from my World. Especially not in Computer Related, the audience for your roasting isn't large enough.

I have to say. After loading OS4 on my 3G I did regret it!!! It was painfully slow! From opening an app to closing one, even typing a message was slow! I have to say that 4.1 is an brilliant improvement. It's not as fast to what it was when I had it new but it's a lot faster than after I put on 4.0.
