Have you tried rebooting whilst holding down the shift key?

Should start in safe mode, hopefully...

May take a while...

What was the last thing you did prior to this happening?

What model of iMac is it? PowerPC, intel?

What mac OS version is running on it?

reboot it and as soon as you hear the chime, hold down the command (apple) option, p and r keys at the same time and keep them held down. The machine should reboot and chime, keep the keys held down until it reboots and chimes again, then let them go ad see if it boots up.

Another thing to try is to reboot and when you hear the chime press the option key and kep it held down and you should see the boot manager screen, at this point it should show your hard drive, which you could select and flight the right facing arrow to boot, you could also pop in your cd and hit the circular arrow icon to refresh the list which should show the cd and again you can click on it and the right facing arrow to boot from it
