Default Any idea guys???

A friend brought his mini notebook over for me to look at, it's a Asus Eee PC 901, running Windows XP. When he fires it up all he gets is a black screen reading: ''Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press enter'' !! I've been into BIOS and made the HDD 1st in the boot order and still no joy??? I can't try an xp recovery either as it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive.!!

Sounds like a problem with the hard drive, boot sector problems judging by the error.

Can you try plugging a USB CDROM and try booting from that??

Sounds like a dead hard drive to me, or as above, there is another boot device.
