Question Won't fire up??

I have a standard stand alone PC running Windows XP.

At night I shut it down and press the big button on front. In the morning I try and start it but it won't load up - I just get a dead screen

At this point I turn off and then back on the main power switch and try again. This usually does the trick and it loads up although I sometimes have to turn on and off a couple of times.

So what is going on? I do get a quick screen flash of WinFast which never happened before. I guess something is interfering with loading process. I'm fairly sure it doesn't have a virus and I use Kaspersky.

Ideas please but bear in mind I am not a computer guru.

Cheers, David

If it fails loading windows (but you get the windows loading screen), when you boot on the machine press "F8" and you can load windows in safe mode. If that works, then try restarting.

It may just be that something is corrupt and going to safe mode fixes it.

Does the machine not power itself down when you send it to shutdown? Sounds like you are starting it back up then and then pressing the power button in a morning to send it to sleep.

Check the settings in your power control panel as to what happens when you press the power button. May be trying to come out of sleep or hibernate which it can't manage. A lot of early XP machines struggled with this.

OK guys, thanks. I''ll investigate some more. At night I use the "Shut Down" option and all the open programs are closed and the machine turns itself off.

Then in the morning I press the big button and it almost seems as if it is powering up but screen remains blank. That's when I turn the main power switch on back of cabinet off and then on and it then usually powers up as it had dome for a couple of years.
