Default Burned a hole in laptop lid...can it be replaced?

I have an Acer Aspire 5601 laptop which I left near a heater and burned a hole in the lid and front bezel. The screen is also damaged, a bit rippled and scorched. My Mrs has contacted our insurance and they are collecting it with a veiw to possibly repairing it.

Its about 3 1/2 years old and cost me £599 (I have the reciept) and was/still is working fine.

Is a repair likely or will they replace it or send me a cheque?

We've never made a claim before so not really sure what the proceedure is.

In my experience, the cost of replacing the screen is almost equal to the cost of a new laptop.

I'd say they'll right it off. a lot of the insurance companies are offering replacments direct or vouchers for the pcworld group, take the vouchers then you can pick best machine instore.

Or request the hard drive back. They sent mine back when they wrote it off.
(OK so a 4 gig laptop drive isn't that useful but I'd rather know where it was )

Thanks for your comments.

I've backed it up now and if they do replace it I will request the hard drive back, although there's nothing on it really.

Its shut off on its own a couple of times since it got 'burned' so i'm going to stick a note to it explaining this, I suspect something else may have got fried.

They're collecting it tomorrow, so I'll post back the outcome.

*Update*
Got a letter from the insurance offering me a new laptop or I could pay some towards an upgraded one under the betterment part of the policy. They said the old laptop would be destroyed under some data protection directive.

Should be here Friday
