Hmm interesting

Been toying with soft-modding my Wii just to put all of our games onto my WD hdd, and run from there (kids aren't exactly respectful to the disks!)

Fantastic site, but soft-modding does seem like a PITA.
My *limited* understanding is that the IOS files have to be constantly updated depending on which games you put on your HDD.
The other downside is that you can't really update your Wii through Nintendo.

The Modchip option looks better, but I can't see any HDD option, so pointless. And £35 compared to free (for softmod)

*NOTICE THAT I'VE NOT MENTIONED "PIRACY" AT ALL!!!!!*

Not yet - now I've read a bit more, my understanding is that once you softmod with the latest IOS, you're pretty much OK for the mid-term (until something new comes out!)

Will be having a play with this later today

Yep thanks mate both checked out, according to the list my Verbatim 320GB drive should be seen, the other link is a superb site, very helpful bunch off guys only to eager to help, unfortunatly am no closer to finding a solution why either wiiflow or usbloader gx is not seeing my connected drive !!

going to try a second drive soon to see if indeed my drive is not compatable but in the meantime would be great to see if I could try get it working as I feel like most things it will turn out to be a stupid error on my part !!!

will keep you posted and if I can help you out in anyway please just ask and if I dont know the answer will try get one for you .

thanks,
john

Jono just update your firmware to 4.2 and follow that guide works every time!

I use usb loader to play my games with a iomega drive. Works brilliantly also good that it will play ntsc no problems

Is there any advantage to softmodding instead of using a chip?

I just purchased a wii and put a Drive Key on it and all backups play straight away, if only I could do the same for my xbox as my kid keeps destroying the discs!

As above really - no warranty issue as you can also restore the NAND (Wii OS)

Also it is free to do - costs you nothing but about 30mins of your time.
AND it is totally up-datable - the hardware mod may not be.

I've soft modded mine. Install modchips in the past, and softmodding is the better option.
I'm stil lon FW 3.1, not updated yet, but using USB loader fine, with an LG 320GB portable drive.
Jono, I'm sure you have, but make sure you have connected the usb to to the right port. Its the bottom one, if the wii was flat. The other is used for guitars etc.
I had problems with GX loader at first, but I unistalled it with wad manager, and re-installed it and it was fine. If you are attempting to use it from a channel, delete that and try again from the homebrew channel.
