Default Password Recovery

Guys,

I've a word 2007 document which is password protected and I can't remember the bloody password - we'll what I thought it was doesn't work, so I've messed it up somehow - caps lock maybe?

I've used some free tools in the past to help me out, they usually only give you a few letters, but to be honest that would probably do in this case.

Any recommendations?

A brute force attack can take some time.

Yes - I stumbled across something when trying to search for my own problem earlier.
I can't remember what it was called though I'm afraid.

yes it does work.

Depending on the complexity of your password, depends on how long it will take.

It took 3 days solid running on a quad core box to find a 9 char password made of Alpha (upper case & lower), Numeric + control characters.

We'll this password is or certainly was supposed to be either 5 or 6 characters long of alpha characters only

If it's just a word the brute force will get it in a couple of minutes. I had the same problem & used the same utility to access the document.

@Dan - Is it something you are after to save passwords in an encrypted file so if you forget them you can look them up??? I can recommend a product called comodo Ivault, I need over 30 passwords for work which must be complex and changed every 30 days with a history of 5. I couldn't do my job without this bit of software.

you could have a look in windows protected storage, if you have ever allowed windows to remember your password. Download a utility called pspv - protected storage password viewer. Might surprise you just how much detail windows stores without you being aware.
