Which RTS game
Hey,
I've recently got a new computer that can handle basically any game I chuck at it. I've always been a fan of RTS games and used to love playing the original Command & Conquer yeras ago. On my last computer I had Empire Earth which I played to death although I never got EEII. I've just downloaded a trail of EEIII and absolutely hated it. There's way less to do, less control and overal strategy and more stuff to worry about that I'm not concerned with (i.e. territories control, etc).
I'm usually happy to just play these types of game in skirmish mode against the computer and I like carefully planning and building my base(s), gathering and managing resources and making the trade off between units and advancement. I don't want a game where you are fighting right from the get go and pretty much none-stop battling until it's over. I perfer a slower build up with more planning and strategy and waves of attack usually being required (Empire Earth was perfect for this sort of stuff).
There seems to be a lot of modern titles that might suit my needs but I don't know which one. C&C 3 doesn't appeal as I read a review that in skirmish mode it's non-stop action that is over in 15-30 minutes. On EE I used to have skirmishes that would take me several evenings to complete!
What can you suggest?

Dawn of War - its old but very playable.
Dawn of War II - haven't got round to playing it yet.
C&C3 I like playing
C&C3 and DoW can favour tanking, DoW2 uses a different way of resource gathering - I think .

Empire Total War, can be very complex if you make it, some good RTS play as well as the old god game ideas of managing/controlling land. You can start with different factions and there is lots of diplomacy. Ship battles are particularly interesting. It has a steep learning curve, possible try one of the older Total War games first (plus they will probably run like stink on a new rig even with all the options turned on).

I have not done any base building yet
Last night i was playing the CO-OP hoarde type mode with 2 other players, it was a good laugh
Never played DOW so i cant really confirm, the last RTS game i played was the first command and conquer game about a million years ago.
I enjoyed the demo of DOW2 so much that i went out and bought "Universe at War" for 1.65 delivered as i couldn't resist (not played it yet tho lol)

DoW2 is pretty good very different than DoW.
Think your probably looking at some of the Total War series though, very good and lets you decide where your going, most other games sort of push you in one direction
