RAID 0 -> 5
I'm currently running two SATA drives in RAID 0, both 320GB.
I've got a spare 500GB SATA drive I was thinking of sticking in and making a RAID 5 setup.
Is it worthwhile, and is it as simple as adding the drive in and changing the config in the RAID controller or will I have to backup and restore, or should I be doing something else with the spare disk?

Are you running the two current disk in a mirror (Raid 1) or are they really in RAID 0?
If your are running RAID 0 and one of your current two harddisks fail you will lose everything. You have no form of redudency currently. If one goes it's all knackered.

Oh, and if you do go from RAID 0 to RAID 5 (or from any RAID config to another) you will lose everything so back it up.
You could also use the two existing drives in RAID 1 so everything that is written to one is replicated to the other so you have some resilience and then have the new 500GB as a standalone for other backups.
This would give you 2 backups in the PC and one in your hand which could go somewhere outside your home.

Chris - Its an Intel controller from a 975x chipset, so I doubt it is and would be 320 then.....
I'm not fussed about backups (RAID 1) to be honest, it just holds Windows, progs and game data, everything else important eg files, music, videos etc is on a share on another server and this in turn is backed up to an external 1TB drive - hence why I didn't bother with mirroring so I could have twice the space and increase disk performance!
I guess its best use would be chucked in as an extra standalone disk then, don't fancy having to back it all up just to make the change.....

your write performance will be equivalent to 1 drive speed but read speed might be a little more.
it'll be intel matrix manager software, so you might be able to do a live raid migration to 5.... and the 500 will be seen as 320.
You'll only be able to use different sized disks in a jbod volume.
