Default Dont update your PS3 to firmware 3.01 !!!

I updated my firmware on the weekend from 3.00 to 3.01 and the machine rebooted fine and ran fine up to the point you put ANY disc in at which point the PS3 fails to read the inserted disc be it a Blu-ray disc (Game or film) or normal DVD.

This is happening to hundreds of PS3s yet Sony are saying there is no fault in the firmware. My PS3 ran perfectly fine until firmware 3.01 was installed. I tried the PS3 fan test to make sure it wasn't dust in the drive.

Apart from it not reading any disc the machine runs fine

PS3 Firmware Update (v3.01) now available – PlayStation.Blog

I installed it the day it came out last month and haven't had any issues . . . neither have any of my mates.

It does seem that there are a lot of people with problems though!

I couldn't actually tell you what version I'm running - I'll assume its 3.01
I was forced to do an update last week sometime when I tried to play Dirt 2

Isn't it the older consoles that are affected - the ones with the PS2 compatability?

40gb version here (although I've changed the drive for a 500gb), and no problems here. Is suspect it has nothing to do with the model of ps3, but instead the download getting corrupted somehow, and the update installing broken software.

I was a bit concerned when I saw this thread, but just went ahead and updated my JPN launch console. All OK. Then I updated my UK early non PS2 console. Also OK.
