I bought a T-mobile one to cover me whilst I was inbetween providers. I got it to connect at it's fastest rate and for web browsing I would say it was on par with normal broadband. XP classes it as a dial up service so it reduces the quality of images etc (you press Shift-R and it loads a better quality version).
The main problem for me though was that I have to send large attachments with my emails and it really struggled to maintain a solid thru put and often just fail the process.
Cost wise, my dongle was pay per days access with no limits but it had an offer where for your first topup for £2 you got 30 days access which I couldn't grumble at. The dongle cost £19.99.

I live in cornwall as well, 3 performed way better than orange for me, managed to get hsdpa in most areas except fowey. mevagissey and redruth could be hit an miss. Even on 3g though it was quick enough to surf most websites.
And they give you 14 days to return it, so if the reception is crap in your area you have nothing to lose.
Speedwise I was getting mostly 2meg+, upload speeds were abysmal though. Bottom line great for surfing the web and downloading the odd music or video file, but if you want to download 12 gig games and terabytes of ****, you will be disappointed

Ive looked at T-mobile, o2 and Vodafone so far.
Looks like voda allows you to top up £15 and use the credit as and when you want, although you only get 1GB. With o2 you get 3GB but you have to top up monthly.
Im not sure how much i'll be using and dont fancy having to top up £15 a month, every month.
Looks like voda is the only one where you dont have to use your credit in 1 month. It doesnt expire.

I have the voda 1 gb, make sure you use it at least every 6 months to maintain the line, also its strange but mine seems to keep topping its self up so i'm only down about 12 pence so far, and they hav'nt got any card details from me.
