Default Do you need a new wireless router?

Just a tip if you're after a new router and want to save money.

There are lots of sky customers selling their wireless/ADSL routers on ebay at the moment. There are usually three types available

Netgear DG834GT (branded as sky)
Netgear DG934G (branded as sky but it's really a DG834Gv3 - not "GT")
Sagem (looks just like the DG934G, but it isn't)

All can be had for between £3 and £5 from ebay as by default they're locked to sky. But the Netgear ones can be easily unlocked with a bit of simple jiggery-pokery and will become the standard Netgear variety. These Netgear routers are ultra reliable.

Go to ebay and search for "sky router" and look out for the two netgear varieties.

The firmware you use can be found on the Netgear website or you can use the custom DGTeam firmware for the DG834GT or the DG834Gv3

Pity the reflashing tools don't work in vista or does compatibility mode work?

Some of the ones on ebay have already been unlocked so you don't even need to bother doing it yourself.

Yep. Compatibility mode makes it work.

The the Netgear recovery utility makes it a breeze; I did mine on an XP machine to be on the safe side.

We have no issues getting a good wireless signal at the end of the garden - so the range is pretty good. I use wireless for a few devices (iPhone, netbook etc) but hardwired for PC's and game consoles. Mines the GT, by the way.

It's been by far the most reliable router I've used and much easier to configure than my old Zyxel.

whats this? is it better than mine

I have a 834Gt running V1.02.09 firmware

my ADSL connection always creeps down from 4000kbps to less that in 1000kbps over a period of a week or too

usually cured by a reboot -- i actually think its more to do with the new adaptive technology in ADSL2 than my router
