My old desktop PC hasnt been used in a while and i decided to boot it up again the other day and and maybe upgrade it to use a bit more.

But, it wont boot up. No input to the monitor, no beeps either.

Power is there though.

Ive tried resetting the CMOS, taking out the HDD, RAM, Graphics card, etc but doesnt change anything.

First thoughts are PSU and/or Motherboard, would you agree?

Got 2.81v from the battery, so that looks ok.

Read somewhere to test it with one stick of ram in. I removed both though. Would that make a difference?

The switch powers up the PC so works in that respect. Is that what you mean?

Is the PSU turning on (i.e fans/HDs/CD spinning up etc)? If no, disconnect the ATX power cable and manually turn on the PSU by bridging the green wire (pin 16) to any black wire (paperclip - keep it clear of anything else though ). If the PSU then fires up; its a mobo or switch problem.

Of course, whilst your there you could just get a multimeter and check the +5v (red), +12v (yellow), -12v(blue) and 3.3v(orange) rails just be sure

PSU comes on and fan spins.

HDD kind of spins, you can feel it but it doesnt make the usual accessing noise.

CD, doesnt have on.

Could it be graphics card related too? Im guessing at this point it likely to be the motherboard?

Ahh so it fires up but will not POST.

A broken motherboard will do this, mine did, unfortunately it also did it on the replacement motherboard as the PSU was faulty, killing both motherboards

All fixed now mind

Yeh, doesnt post. Maybe better off replacing them both at the same time then i guess?
