Default Compressing movies to DVD size (Mac)

Hello,
For all you Mac gurus, bit a confuddlement!

Been a while since I've done this, and in the meantime, OSX has moved on, shutting some paths that I would normally have.

Anyhoo.
Got a movie that I've done on iMovie HD (6.03) on my G5 (running 10.5.7)
With a boggo Superdrive.

I have exported the movie into iDVD (and here's where the trouble starts) - as the movie is 2.14hours long, it won't -

1. go through the wizard (2hr limit)
2. fit on a DVD, coz it's too big (iirc, about 300meg too big)

SO - what are my options?

So far, I have -

1. Exported the movie as a Quicktime movie to put into iDVD - quality was naff though. Could redo it, but with a 5hr rendering time, I need to make sure the settings are right!!LOL!! Any hints?

2. Tried to import the movie onto my shiny new MacBook Pro, running iMovie 08.

Not very successful, even though you can apparently import iMovie HD projects into it. Firstly, they don't play and when you try to export it in 08, it crashes.

My reason for trying this is that my MBP has got a DL DVD drive, so it would be able to burn the movie.

In the good old days, I would use Compressor to compress the file down, chuck it into iDVD, build a menu then burn. Simple.

When did it become difficult?

And for anybody asking, I'm using iMovie HD over 08, because 08 is cr@p.

Can anybody help?

DAn

What about Toast? Might have some compression options you could fiddle with.

Question

Hi Markus,

Thought about that, but iDVD won't let me export the project as an image. It says it's too big.

DVD capacity = 4.4GB of 4.2GB! Bugger.

Any suggestions on how to get the file out of iDVD?

yeh - thought of that

Problem being that I can't get the ts files created to put into Handbrake (or Toast)

However, I've come up with plan B - put it onto 2 DVDs, chuck em into my MBP and reburn with with DL disk.....
