I asked the same question elsewhere and posted up the apps I had, plus got a few responses from others.

I have jailbroken my 3GS, mainly to see how easy it was, and also to see if there is anything worthwhile out there, and as yet I've not found anything that makes it worthwhile. Obviously ultrasn0w for removing the network lock, but I don't need that.

Funny as I was thinking of starting a useful / must have apps thread.

Ive not downloaded that many tbh but ones I use are Sky+ Remote, Ebay, Facebook and the best game (well most addictive) by far is Fuzzle!

ebay and facebook used the most for me...... download shazam off itunes, it's a music recognition software, that once it ges the song info can direct you to itunes to download it.
has the new 3.0 firmware got mms now?
if not jailbreak it m8 and download smirlymms2 for mms and irealsms for better texting, plus you can get a video recorder free.
not sure why such a big release phone came out with a video recorder or mms

iPhone OS 3.0 introduced MMS. Video is only available on the iPhone 3GS as I presume it requires hardware the 3GS has which the other models do not.

If your'e a traveller then Wififofum or similar, connects to networks that don't show in the standard app. Motion X GPS, even the free one is great and Air Sharing is super handy.

I saw 1618 kbps on my 3G the other day. I think the speed enhancements are firmware/hardware related, not data speed.

Good apps I find are

Shazam
tv guide
ebay
Around me - great for finding everything from pubs to petrol stations when travelling
currency

and for fun

pocket god
flight control
flood-it
let's golf

cool but useless

flip time
banner free
fuzz lights

Quite correct about the speed side of things being not related to data speed:

This from Apple's site:

The Fastest iPhone Ever
The first thing you’ll notice about iPhone 3GS is how quickly you can launch applications. Web pages render in a fraction of the time, and you can view email attachments faster. Improved performance and updated 3D graphics deliver an incredible gaming experience, too. In fact, everything you do on iPhone 3GS is up to 2x faster and more responsive than iPhone 3G.

I did initially think there was some hardware upgrade to do with the cellular side of things, but looking at the 3G and 3GS specs on Apple's site, they both have the same cellular capabilities.

Not wishing to harp on about this, but unless I'm not reading that link correctly, it still relates simple to the rendering speed of a particular website, not the load time nor data transfer speeds between the 3G and 3GS

To anyone using Shazam on the iPhone - remove it and install Midomi - much better in every way...

You can hum songs to it, or just say a song title or band name and it'll find the song and allow you to preview it. You can literally hum anything (Ok, within reason - but you know what I mean) and within a few seconds be playing the actual song on your iPhone... very cool indeed.

<cough> Didn't realise you normally had to pay for it.... fair enough!

Anyway, however you get hold of it - it's still much better - Jailbreaking and Installous are your friends....!!!

By far my most important app is iFART
iFart Mobile ? #1 App on iTunes - The Premier iPhone Fart Application

I'm just gutted its no longer working on my iPhone 3GS. Apparently a recent update corrupted something, and they've submitted a fix to Apple.

I have downloaded things for free told a bloke at work it's not a bad app, then it was 59p later that same day went to £1.19. They must change price if it gets hits. Don't want to jailbreak it only had it 2 weeks. Best phone I ever had means I can work and sure like now

Go on, give the Jailbreak a go! I've done my 3GS twice now (first to see how simple it was, then removed it to check a few things, then re-applied it yesterday). purplera1n is your friend and it's very simple to use (I've got a thread in this section about it).

Simply backup your iPhone before doing anything and you'll be good to go.

Of course, the question does remain if there is any good reason to jailbreak it, apart from then being able to use purplesn0w on it to unlock it. There may be some apps in cydia that are handy, and of course, if you're feeling naughty you can always use instalous and obtain cracked applications, but I could not possible condone that.

Citrix Receiver is the best app on the planet. I'm not bias whatsoever! TripIt is very useful if you get around a bit.

Just downloading Citrix Receiver. The other half uses Citrix on her laptop to login to work, and it is seriously painful at times (access speed) so I'm going to try it via the iPhone, would love it to be a heck of a lot quicker, it'll nark her right off then

just had a quick look at jailbreaking via your link, what is the main reason for this. Call me thick but never had a phone like this befor.

Two main reasons;

1) Allows you to unlock the iPhone from O2, so you can use it on whatever network you want

2) Ability to add/modify the phone in ways that are normally locked by using third party applications. For example, you can set a wallpaper that shows behind all your app icons, and you can change the style of the app icons. Basically customizing the phone more than Apple allows.
