Windows suddenly seems to be averse to longer filenames!

Windows suddenly seems to be averse to longer filenames!
Hi all,
Sorry if I'm being dense here, but I've been trying to save a few documents in word and it doesn't seem to want to let me use file names with much more than 8 characters! Bit annoying!!
Seemed to have a big update recently.....might this be a windows Vista update glitch.....have I inadvertently changed a setting?
Advice appreciated.
