Netgear router
For some reason stoped working this morning, I did get online first thing but ever since cannot i have checked my username/password which as i know was not altered was all correct. I reset the router and put back in the username/pass but still will not conect to internnetsometimes the light to confirm you being online is off sometimes red and somtimes green, but the webpage still canot be displayed. I have phoned CS for my isp (demon) they say their side is ok it either my line or maybe router atfault.
any ideaswhat it is should i get a new rouer to try or call BT the router is a Netgear 834 and about 2 years old with no problems untill now.

If you look at connection status on the router, does it show an IP address?
Or look on the home page of the router, you'll see a series of IP addresses at the top of the status section

look at your logs -- the below come form a 834 and shows the sequence of a sucessful connection
Sun, 2009-04-19 06:53:45 - LCP down. (lost physical connection)
Sun, 2009-04-19 06:53:47 - Initialize LCP. (reconnect trying)
Sun, 2009-04-19 06:53:47 - LCP is allowed to come up. (physical connection established)
Sun, 2009-04-19 06:53:50 - CHAP authentication success (correct uername and password supplied)
after this you have successfuly authenticated with the ISP -- thats as far as you can go, if the ISP has problems then nothing you can do will change anything
as a further troubleshooting exercise you could try pinging the two addresses below
ADSL Port
MAC Address 00:18:4D:XX:XX:XX
IP Address 213.20X.1XX.XX (your IP -- the WAN side of your router)
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 62.241.XXX.XXX (ISP Gateway address)
Domain Name Server 212.139.132.43
212.139.132.44

My Netgear performed faultlessly for a year, but now drops the connection randomly
I've had hours with them, but they don't seem to be able to stop it, nor do they want to replace it.
So far, I've had Linksys, (crap), Belkin, (refused to work from the outset), and now this.
Must be me.

Factory reset on the back may be worth a go, I've had to do that with Linksys routers when the wiresless wouldn't play ball.
Also check for firmware updates then go through the steps that Hodgy outlined.
Could you borrow someone else's router and test that if all else fails, just to rule out a line fault

recently alot of ISP's have switched to new technology (DSLAM i think) this is adaptive technology which tries to run at say 8mb but will drop over a period of time till it finds its true supportable speed. this is different to the old fixed 1mb or 2mb lines
when mine ran at 2mb my netgear never droped the line, ever, but a couple of yeras ago my ISP moved me to 8mb (FOC), my router actually only sees a connection of 4mb, but looking at my router logs my connection drops continuosly -- i suspect if I asked my ISP to put me back to the old fixed 2mb technology it would solve the problem
