Default Help recovering files from old laptop HDD

As title, need help please with recovering some files from my old laptop HDD. The laptop died, so I've removed the HDD, gone to Maplins and got an adapter to allow me to plug it into the desktop PC and can now sort of see the files.

I say sort of, as the files appear in File Explorer, but when I click on the files to view them, it says I don't have permission to view them, and it won't let me copy them onto the PC.

The laptop was running XP, and I'm now on Vista with the desktop. I presume its some sort of security setting I need to change to access the files?!

Any help would be appreciated

All sorted now. Figured out the Access / User permissions thingy, and can see all the files and view now
