the windows Firewall doesn,t usualy block outbound request
the network between you laptop and the router will almost certainly be private -- probably in the 192.168.X.X range
the router will be responsible for "translating" this to a public IP address, as long as you have NAT turned on on the firewall
if you are getting an IP in the 169.254.xxx.xxx then you are having a DHCP issue

If you are connected to the router the Laptop will have already obtained the ip address mate.
Click on the start button and i nthe "search bar" type cmd, this will bring up a DOS prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL and this will show you your IP address etc.
Is the screen shot above from your machine ?

13 year old wants his i-pod touch on the net
and in seconds has the bowels of the net gear router on screen and he links the i-pod touch, nintendo wii, our main vista laptop and our back-up XP lap top all on line ..... blimey !
What do they teach our kids at school these days LOL
I'm looking at our poor netgear router now flashing away .....can it cope ??
