Public and Private wireless network question

Help again

I still can't get access to my wireless network from the laptop and other devices :)

Is it because I have it as a "private" network ??

Firewall ON? Turn it off and see what happens.

I was thinking the Windows firewall - I mentioned it as I had *issues* the other day that turned out to be that. In XP it's under Control Panel/Windows Firewall.

the windows Firewall doesn,t usualy block outbound request

the network between you laptop and the router will almost certainly be private -- probably in the 192.168.X.X range

the router will be responsible for "translating" this to a public IP address, as long as you have NAT turned on on the firewall

if you are getting an IP in the 169.254.xxx.xxx then you are having a DHCP issue

I'm struggling to understand your post......... sorry :(

I can connect my laptop to the wireless network (limited) but it refuses to let me have internet access or give me an IP address.

Help....... :)

If you are connected to the router the Laptop will have already obtained the ip address mate.

Click on the start button and i nthe "search bar" type cmd, this will bring up a DOS prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL and this will show you your IP address etc.

Is the screen shot above from your machine ?

Hangs head in shame :(

13 year old wants his i-pod touch on the net :D

and in seconds has the bowels of the net gear router on screen and he links the i-pod touch, nintendo wii, our main vista laptop and our back-up XP lap top all on line ..... blimey !

What do they teach our kids at school these days LOL

I'm looking at our poor netgear router now flashing away .....can it cope ??

Cheers
