I've got a HP laptop. The power cable has broken right where it comes out of the power supply, so I thought I'd take it apart and solder it to reconnect it.

Anyone have any clues as to how I might get the PSU apart before I set to it with the "brute force and ignorance" approach?

You,ll find the unit is a solid block

They tend to use potting compound to encapsulate the whole board.


And to stop you repairing it

Damn... it does feel pretty solid.

Equivalent supplies don't seem to cost the earth on fleaby, so I think it will get treated to one of those rather than forking out for a HP part.

I disassembled my Sony laptop power supply when the same thing happened.
It was glued rather than screwed so just needed a bit of gentle persuasion with a sharp knife and a screwdriver blade.
Didn't look quite the same when it went back together but at least it worked and was safe due to me re-glueing and taping the seams.
I got a cheapo one as a backup and it broke in the exactly the same place except only a month later rather than years.
I'd get the HP one if I were you - buy cheap = buy twice.

I'll see how much the HP ones are. The laptop doesn't get used much these days, apart from just backing up files for work to take them off site, so if the HP supply is stupidly expensive, a cheapy one will do fine.
