whats gonna make my pc fly?
#1
I am looking at buying the bits for a system for uni, i am looking to keep it as cheep as possible whilst getting good performace.
Looking at getting a 1000mhz processor or similar it's gonna be a AMD but which model? Athlon or duron i also want 256mb ram so do i go ddr or sdram?
I am gonna stick a gforce 2 200mx 64mb in plus a dvd drive.
is it worth me paying the extra for the athlon and ddr?
I will be using it for dvd's, surfin scoobynet and playing the "occasional" game of cs on our network.
Would appreciate any advice!

Be careful but you can overclock the CPU. I have been running a 1GHz Athlon on an Abit KT7A RAID motherboard at 1.1Ghz no probs for 6 months. Dont forget about extra cooling though.
Also if you want it to fly, get 512mb of RAM and make sure you get a bloody fast hard disk as that usually is the bottleneck for PCs.

Agree with Druddle
As much RAM as you can afford and a nice fast hard disk with big cache and high rpm.
CPUs aren't that important if you're only intending to run Word and Excel and office apps.
If you wanna play games, get the best CPU & GeForce card you can afford (don't bother with other makes as they're still catching up)
I ditched Pentiums recently and got an Athlon without ANY regrets.
