Just found this, i don't really follow the demo scene but this is from 2006 and has just amazed me

how can the demo groups get this kind of performance from the amiga when the games devs back in the day could not ?

Because demos generally were not interactive. Essentially they just ran a script. Didn't have to worry about annoying things like unpredictable user input, collision detection etc.

Pretty amazing some of the stuff they managed to squeeze out of the cpu though

Some of the "cut scenes" were pretty bad back in the day, but i have never seen anything like what the demo scene put out, in a retail game.
