Hi

Sounds like a recent update which could be causing the loop. Or a recent hardware/software change. Anyway the best bet is to use safe mode, if you can use system restore to a earlier date, restore to then. If you cant use sys restore, then you may have to uninstall any programs from the control panel.

Hope this helps

Can also be caused by a correct file or broken fat entry. I had to resecue a machine for someone a few weeks ago that did this. Ended up booting to dos and running chkdsk to fix it.

it wouldnt go on in safe mode it just looped again, and every other option for that matter.

fixd now though, i inserted the windows xp installation cd and booted the cd drive.

then i did try to select recover or repair which ever 1 it was and it wasnt having any of it.

so in the end had to re-install windows which was a bugger as i lost all my music and picturres etc etc.

thanks for the help any way chaps

Did you not boot to the xp dos prompt and try chkdsk? Sounds like a corrupt sector which could have been recovered (without a reinstall).

Did you try booting to the recovery prompt, from the XP CD? It doesn't use the hard drive at all in that case so it should have worked...

Seems unusual it would install a fresh copy without letting you boot to XP DOS for chkdsk etc.

Very strange though, I have never heard of that before but hey ho. I take it you will be backing your data up on a separate drive now? :-)

mr imprezza -- to avoid this in the future create another partition on your hard drive say d:\ -- use that to store all the data

then when you have to reload the OS on the c:\ no data is effected

d:\ is still there with all your pics/music

also get a usb drive for back up -- peanuts in the scheme of things
