Default capturing a video

need to capture a video playing in media player 11 (or DVD Player in OSX). what's my best option?

Will VLC play it and allow an export ?

i thought VLC could do it but couldnt figure out how to do it.

'File / Streaming/Export Wizard' then 'Transcode/Save to File' I think.
